Modern medicine has successfully prolonged the lives of people with chronic complex disease, but it has not considered the quality of life: this then is the third frontier of healthcare, the enhancement of life quality while reducing operating costs. Bridgepoint Health is one of Canada’s leading centres for the complex chronic disease. The redevelopment project is as much about city-building and engagement with the community as it is about creating an architecture for wellness. Its 10.2 acre site is located at the natural eastern edge of downtown Toronto, and characterized by contrasting threshold conditions which ironically resonate the challenges of complex chronic disease; that is to adapt to each one within an overall context of wellness.
