An urban college transforms its traditional campus through a design response to the digital revolution
- A forgotten 40 year-old court yard becomes a new campus nerve centre that efficiently uses space and provides flexibility for this important building and the entire campus.
- This two year fast-tack project was part of the federal government’s Knowledge Infrastructure Program and was completed on time and budget.
- The building considers sustainability throughout its design including high glazing ratios, rooftop clerestories that allow for electricity reductions, HVAC systems with enthalpy wheel heat recovery, condensing boilers, radiant heating, carbon dioxide monitoring, and advanced lighting control. The life-cycle cost of each building component resulted in selecting durable building finishes including polished concrete floors and block wall assemblies. Additionally, nearly 100% of rooftop rainwater is recovered and used in bathrooms and the irrigation system.
- Seneca College is Ontario’s largest college, with approximately 20,000 full-time students and 70,000 part time.
